If you’ve ever been in a job interview, chances are you’ve encountered this question—it’s a classic favorite. But how should you answer it? Should you boast endlessly, or should you modestly downplay your abilities?

In my experience, the best response depends on two main factors: the specific role you’re applying for and your genuine strengths. Here’s a roadmap to help you choose the right ones to highlight:

1. Identify Your Strengths

Reflect on your past experiences: What were you consistently praised for as a child or student? Consider your academic achievements and volunteer work. What skills did you leverage to succeed? Additionally, seek feedback from family members, friends, colleagues, or teachers to gain further insight into your strengths.

2. Analyze the Job Description

Examine the job description for keywords related to skills and qualities. It typically outlines the skills and experience the company seeks. These keywords can serve as a valuable guide for identifying relevant strengths. Additionally, research the company’s culture, values, and mission statement. Do they prioritize innovation, customer focus, or environmental sustainability? Highlight strengths that align with their culture.

3. Match Your Strengths to the Job

Focus on strengths directly relevant to the job requirements and those that can benefit the company. Always aim to quantify your achievements. Instead of simply stating you’re skilled, provide concrete examples. For instance: “I enhanced efficiency by 22.5% through the implementation of a new XYZ management system.”

Remember

When responding to this question, avoid simply listing your strengths. Instead, craft a compelling narrative that illustrates how you can leverage your strengths in the workplace to bring value to the company.

Good luck!
